New Ground In Brazil?

In recent years we, as a family of churches, have been building relationships with several churches and Pastors in the nation of Brazil, facilitated by Daniel Lucena, a Brazilian from Crawley Community Church. In March 2020, just before Covid-19 lockdown hit the UK, I was privileged to be able to visit Brazil with a team from New Ground. The headline is that there are churches longing to be part of a church family like ours and it feels like Paul’s vision of the man of Macedonia in Acts 16 saying “Come over here and help us!”

We visited three churches:

The church in Iracemapolis is led by Biro and Patricia. Biro attended the New Ground leadership conference in 2018 and they, as a family, also attended Ashburnham in 2019. Iracemapolis is a small city (population about 25,000) with a lot of need. This church was planted by Biro and Patricia about 7 or 8 years ago and they now gather about 100 people when the main meeting happens on a Sunday evening. Alongside the church, they run an ‘association’ – which is basically a charity running amazing projects for vulnerable children in their city.

Piricicarba is only a 30 minute drive from Iracemapolis but it is a very different city with a population of almost 600,000. Raizes (Roots) Church is led by Carlos and Cinda who attended Ashburnham in 2019. Historically the church was part of the Baptist Union of Brazil but is now independent. They have just moved into a warehouse building which is very run down and needs a huge amount of work, but they are already running meetings there! Again, they gather about 100 people on a Sunday evening.  Carlos says they already feel how different and wonderful it is to have a church family and not walk alone.

Joinville is further south. It’s a very young, creative and beautiful place to live, with a population of about 600,000. Fabiano and Thaina are a young couple who have begun to gather some people – some new Christians and some young families. They have a huge passion for people and so clearly love Jesus.

This was such a fruitful trip and it seems like God has opened a door for us in Brazil and our New Ground family is growing. We are delighted to be working with a Brazilian, serving Brazilian pastors in Brazilian cities and we look forward to seeing how God will use us!

Please continue to pray for Brazil. At the time of writing, Brazil is fast becoming one of the worst affected nations on earth by Covid-19. The churches we are connected with in Piricicarba and Iracemapolis are serving their cities in amazing ways in the midst of the crisis.
