Devina's Story

My name is Devina and I am from a Hindu background, from Mauritius. Mauritius has a multicultural population where there is a large diversity of faith and religion. A bit like London, I suppose, where you have Hindu, Muslims, Christians and many others.

Before coming to East End Church, my knowledge of Jesus was only through my Catholic friends, when they were celebrating weddings in churches or celebrating any other Christian festival like Easter and Christmas.

I have a friend who was part of a church growing up but went away from it in his teenage years. Last year he got critically sick and during his time of distress, he remembered Jesus Christ and called out to him and asked for help. Jesus answered his prayer and healed him. I was there at that time and was going through this difficult period with him. He is a completely different person now and has gone back to church. This was my first experience of God’s mercy, grace, patience and kindness. It was a miracle!

In the past, whenever I had issues in my life, I always turned to booze and cigarettes. I would cry for a few days and then move on with life. But this year, in mid-June, when I was having some personal issues, I remembered the advice of my friend. He told me if you ever feel down, trust in the Lord and he will lift you up. I bought a bible and started reading through it. He also told me to look for a local evangelical church to go to for worship and prayer. So, after looking online and watching a few live sessions on YouTube, I decided to go to East End Church! I went on my own and was very surprised at how everybody was so warm, welcoming and kind. I was very emotional and I could not stop crying while listening to the prayers and the worship.

Since then, I’ve been reading the bible and praying every day. I’ve got to know the Lord Jesus through the Bible and I’ve been amazed by His miracles and His glory.  For example, He can walk on water (Matthew 14: 22-33) and He raised Lazarus from death (John 11: 38-44). I got to know His power through His words: “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me?” (John 14)

I got to know His mercy, kindness and righteousness through the story of the woman caught in adultery:
He said, “He who is without sin among you, let him throw the first stone at her.” Then no one could condemn her and Jesus forgave her and ask her to sin no more. (John 8)

The bible has also provided me with comfort and strength during the hard times in my life:
"Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and mind through Jesus Christ.” (Philippians 4-6-7)

The more I read the word of God, the more it makes sense to me and gives me strength to face challenges in life. My behaviour and how I interact with people has changed. The issues in my life are still there, but the way I look at them has changed. By following the commandments of Jesus, I see the world differently and I behave differently. My perception of fellow Christians has also changed. I don’t consider them extreme in their faith, I see their faithfulness, love, passion and obedience to our Lord, Jesus Christ.

My baptism is a public declaration of my faithfulness and obedience to God. It is my commitment to follow and love my Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, with all my heart, soul and might.
